homemade putting and chipping green

i was wondering...how can i make a homemade putting and chipping green? i have 30 acres with about 15 of it being fields and i was wanting to put a putting/chipping green at my house...it would be nice to make like a par 3 or something but thats later. how would i start on this adventure? bermuda sod? fake outdoor carpet ****?

How did you choose your green? At the moment £4k is out of the question (in fact £4 might be hard to get by the old lady ) but in idle moments I've surfed the net and there are a few suppliers out there so i'd be interested to know whether you were able to see (and try) some installations?was it word of mouth? cost? etc.etc.

Since (imo) improving chipping and putting must be a key way of scoring better I'd be interested to know if anyone else has invested, and how they got on.

For a few years like most golfers during winter I suffered with putting practice, the carpet at home is ok but I wanted more.

I used to buy a cheaper version which is a hard turf like material from a carpet supplier, give them a visit and ask for artificial green carpet.

Its expensive I think it cost me about £120.00 for a piece about 12 ft x 6ft, cut a hole in and you can put it anywhere to create curves etc...........I used to put mine on the drive for practice.

Then I heard about Huxley who had done some tees at one of our local courses, so I contacted them.......the rest is history.

When checking out a local course (can't remember which) to see if we fancied playing there I came across Huxley in the context of Winter Tees and found they did greens as well but I've neve met anyone who had a set up at home.

How realistic is it?

It is very realistic you can get the greens to 10 on the stint metre by adding more sand, the surface is a very fine plastic that is sand filled with black silica sand and brushed in, the holes are exactly the same used at your golf course, the chipping area is the same only longer grass. When you chip it also spins and holds just like a real green.

Ufortunatley I don't have a internet connection at home so I cannot post any pics, but here is one very similar which I took the idea about the railway sleepers from, as my garden used to be on a slight slope, so I had sleepers fitted all around.

My cost involved the sleppers and labour too, if your serious then give them a bell, there was no pressure to have one done or the the minimum size.

There is also an option for fitting yourself, however I don't think there is the ten year warranty if you do it yourself.

The "Dubai Country club" An all Sand course with lots of bunkers (duh!) and Oiled sand greens called "browns". "There is grass on this course... but it takes the shape of a matt you carry with you and if your within the staked ares you can hit from it!." Course record is 64. and a true test of golf.
