Talking Big Bertha

My husband has bought me a Callaway Big Bertha for my birthday. I was a late starter to golf...60's, and for the last few years have tee'd off with either a 3 or 5 Callaway wood. I remember reading a senior's golf book where it advised those of us over 60 not to use a driver. Most of the ladies now drive with the large headed driver's and get much more distance that I do with the 3 wood...hence the Big Bertha. I have not been out to the course yet to use it and wonder if there is any special advice on how exactly to use this huge club. I would love to reduce my handicap with this club. I also have the problem of arthritic knees so am not quite as flexible now.

Re: Big Bertha

Well, the very first thing I would do is have this club fitted to you by a competent clubmaker. In all likelihood, it's too long.

From there, the general advice is to tee the ball up so that 1/2 the ball sits above the crown of the driver.

Re: Big Bertha

Thanks for the advice. I don't think there is a clubmaker anywhere near where I live, but will ask at the golf shop. I also got two new tees when I bought the driver. I have not seen them before. They are huge with a brush top on them

Re: Big Bertha

Your tees are - wait for it - brush tees.

The benefit is that they give you a consistent tee height.

The downfall (IMO) is that if you like a higher (or lower) tee height, you need to buy more brush tees.

LOL...oh yes you can, you catch a swing a little low and hit the plastic and you'll knock that sly thing half down the fairway. I'm not a big fan of brush tee, just a gemick. Buy your self some cheap 3 inch wood tee's at Walmart. The way drivers are going these days, that is all you will be able to buy before long. They use to say that about senior using 3 woods because of the loft, that was years ago, now days with the new technologies, lighter materials, and shafts, back weighting to get the ball airborne, etc... it is not a problem. Callaway diffinately fits into the category of using new technologies. Enjoy your new driver.

Re: Big Bertha

Thanks for the tip. I will keep my eye on the tee I live in Western Australia and we don't have Walmart here......yet! I will purchase some of the three inch wood tees from my local golf shop. I haven't been on to the course yet to try out the driver, but hopefully next week.

Re: Big Bertha

Maybe try the Golf Box in East Perth. Apparently theres one in Joondalup too. I have also seen a Drummond Golf shop in Osbourne Park but i have never been in there.

I am confident that they would be able to fit clubs.

Re: Big Bertha

I have often been to Golf Box when we lived in Perth, but we now live in Denmark...although I am hoping to visit Perth sometime in March. Thanks for the help.
