Cool Pitching motion for mid irons?

Does anyone use the pitching motion when using your mid irons? (7 - 5 irons) By pitching motion I mean narrow stance, little to no lower body movement, club back along target line, accelerate through and finishing with hips and chest facing the target.

Most people will use a full swing for the maximum distance of each club or a 3/4 swing of a club one up for the normal club that they would use for the distance. I'm new to the game (playing for 10 months) but it appears that if you could master pitching with mid irons it could add another dimension to your game. I haven't tried it yet as I'm still trying to be consistent pitching my wedges.

Re: Pitching motion for mid irons?

Odd that you should ask.

I often use this as a punch out. I start by 'doubling the yardage' then taking one less club.

For example, if I'm 100 yards away, I'll think about my 200 yard club (4i) then take the 5 (one less club).

Then I make a Dave Pelz 9 o'clock pitch. Perfect.

Re: Pitching motion for mid irons?

I use that shot alot of times on the first few holes as an approach shot, when I have not properly warmed up prior to my round. Works better if there are no hazards in the way. It is an easy, safe shot to learn, with distance being the only variable for the individual using it. Other times I use that shot is during a really windy day, or any other time I need a low shot. Do yourself a favor after you are confident with your mid irons, and try it with your long irons also. You will find better control if you choke down a little with those longer clubs. No matter which iron you use it is a great stroke saving shot to have.....GJS

I set up the same as I would full shot with both clubs. My ball position is centered, and my stance is square/perpendicular to my target line. I probably do narrow my stance, but very little. After that, it is low, abreviated back swing, with an abreviated follow through after impact. As posted above, it is a punch shot of sorts for me. I do use my shoulders, and upper arms (the triangle) more so on this shot. Tough part for me is selecting a club, while trying to figuring out how much run on the shot I am going to get due to my swing, and course conditions. Things like choking down on my club, wet/dry fairways, uphill/downhill greens, or the lie I am hitting off of. It's a good shot to have. GJS
