All shots (driver included) have backspin. The concept is about the approach to hitting a chip/pitch shot. You MUST hit your short game shots with confidence. Without the deliberate move down on the shot, you eliminate all of the effective loft. Trying to nudge your chips forward, or "pick" them off the ground is how shots end up getting skulled or chili dipped.

What you are talking about is correct though. By all means, if you have no obstructions in your way (rough, bunkers etc.), go ahead and chip with a 7 iron and get the ball rolling sooner; however, even with the 7 you must swing down on this as well, as opposed to "putting" your chips forward.

Re: How to get check on chips?

Pnearm, I was playing around with this shot yesteday. Best results I got were to play the shot like a sandshot. Play the ball foward, openstance, leading edge of the club facing the hole. Now almost stiff wristed, choke up alot to the metal on a sw, short backswing and swing across the toe line down through the ball but almost no follow throught. this seemed to put the most spin on the ball and stopped quickly. Hope this helps mike.

Re: How to get check on chips?

This is useful when you have green with up and down slope where you won't be able to control. This shot ignore all slope and goes like a bullet towards the hole and stop within 4-8 feet.
