New putter....horrible results.

Saturday night as I meandered through the local proshop for my new ProVI's, I happened across the new assorment of putters. I have been wanting to change for awhile anyway after several people told me that my putters face was really really hard, and lacked feel (it was a cheepy).

To make a long story short...I buy the putter that feels the most comfortable to me (Nike Oz T-160 blade) and set off for the course the next morning.

(13) greens in regulation.
(13) birdie putts (0 birdies, 2 pars)
(6) 2-putts (4 balls rolled off the green)
(7) 3-putts

the other 5 holes were either approach or chip shots "within the leather" that never got putted, as my partners picked them up.




What in the world happened???

I know the answer will be "different feel" or something like this, but is that a reality, or just an excuse for lousy putting? Does it make that big a diffrence?

You were confident in your old putter until everyone undermined it...

I guess, build up the confidence with a new one, or stick with the devil you know, equipment is never as much to blame as a golfer would like to think!

ya i went from my putter to the macgregor v-foil and havent had the best success...i just havent been able to control the speed as the v-foil strikes the ball a hundred times better than my last putter

just ordered a rossa sebring 3, hope i have a little better success

I've never known something as bad as that what a disaster, you'll probably need a bit more getting used too it.

Imagine that. You bought a new club, and now your distance is off. Surprisingly, most people figure that putters are largely interchangeable. I'd say they are, if they all have the same inserts, and all have the same MOI at impact. But since neither of the above statements are true, then none of the above statements can hold water.

Putters, just like any other club, have an adjustment period to learn about their distance. You wouldn't grab an iron and be surprised that it goes longer or shorter than your current one, would you? The same goes for putters.

Now, that said: Since you've found one that you like the feel of, stick with it, and learn about it. Learn what it takes to get it to go the distances you want.

Believe it or not, I've had the same putter for a year now, and I'm still learning little things about it. Like I can't putt with a Tungsten weight behind the face. Like there's a little ridge in the grip where the manufacturer has their logo that seems to work very well when I don't need the full force of the putter. Give it some time - you may end up loving it.

You might want to check to see where the sweet spot on the putter face is on your new putter. A simple way is to hold the putter by the shaft between the thumb, and index (pointer) finger. Then with the other hand, while holding a golf ball, tap the face of the putter in various points near the center of the face. When you find the exact point where the putter face does not twist when tapped with the ball, mark that spot on top of your putter with a sharpie. That is the sweet spot on that particular putter's face. I have an old mallet style putter, that the sweet spot is not exactly where the manufacturer marked it with the aim line. It is actually 1/4" off center, towards the toe. Just a thought. GJS

What I am noticing after a few practice sessions on the putting green, is that the weight of my new putter (160g) is substantially less than my old, extremely heavy putter. Everything I am hitting comes up short, then short again.

I love the "feel" of the ball off the face....it's almost like I can feel the dimples; however, to putt the same distances as I was before, it feels like I am needing to apply to much force to get it there. It's an amount of force I do not feel comfortable applying. I am afraid of rolling the ball 12 feet past on every stroke. I guess thats where practice and trust come in.

What about ball position? Are you getting much top spin - good roll on the ball.

I play mine off the inner left heel (r/h) - like the driver.

Just a thought.

I have a really old putter, a Chicago Classic, but I love it. Now I found a YES putter that is just like it, but am not sure I want to change to the new one.
I believe of any club in the bag, the putter is the one club that you have to bond with. it's the make you or break you club. I do know this, a new putter is like a new car. You know you can use, but it take time to get to know it. Stick with it.
