Adding weight to clubs

Hi,
I was wandering if i am allowed under R & A rules to add weight to my putter as i find it easier to putt when i add weight to the clubhead.

I've tried it by putting batteries in the gap in my odyssey two-ball and it seemed to work well in my front room but i want to add some proper weighting, am i allowed to do that?

Re: Adding weight to clubs

A lot of pros put lead tape on their putters. I'm not sure what your allowed to do as far as what type of weight and how much your allowed.

Yes, you're allowed to add weight. Lead tape is the usual method.

Re: Adding weight to clubs

Thank you.

Has anybody here put lead tape on their putters or any other club and has it made any difference?

Re: Adding weight to clubs

I use an adjustable weight putter (mentor sports triad 2 - www.mentorsportstech.com).

It's firmly, firmly, firmly in the bag. I tried the Mentor Sports Duet earlier this year, but couldn't get it heavy enough.

I have taped three of my putters to where I feel more comfortable...does it help? I average 33 putts a round, not the best or worst but at least I like the feel...

Re: Adding weight to clubs

Hi i have stacks of lead tape on my putter and i find it very beneficial. The reason being that once the putter is swinging, it has more weight and momentum and is less liable to track ofline (by tenseness in arms etc). In saying that the general advice is that you should only really have a heavy putter on slow greens. Its all down to personal preference though and quite a few people have commented on how heavy my putter is, but i would struggle to use a putter off the shelf as it would be too light.
My putter is a rosa monza copy mallett putter, and i have lead tape on either side of the mallet. If you are putting tape on make sure it is equally distributed on either side- for balance.

Good luck

Re: Adding weight to clubs

Just keep in mind, if/when you play in a tournament what ever weight you have added, your stuck with until the completion of the round, because you can not change the playing chracteristics of your clubs once you start, meaning no adding or removing the weight. If it falls out, you are allowed to replace it, but that is it.

Re: Adding weight to clubs

GoNavy mentioned that any weight added must remain in place for the full round ie. fallen weights must be replaced
Question : If the weight falls off but cant be located can I continue to use the "lighter" club ?

Re: Adding weight to clubs

I use the gerin rife putter which has adjustable weights; cannot adjust during a round but before is ok.
