3 types of fringes chips

i watched the golf channel uk tonight and they had a programme on chipping from the fringe

the first one was a conventional swing (just use shoulders). this one they said didn't always get close to the hole

the second was where you hold the club slightly closed, and on impact you turn more closed, leaving the hands head of the club. this technique allowed the ball to skip on with top spin

and the third was cocking the wrists on the back swing and then altering wrist back to the start position. this allowed the ball to gather back-spin

remember these shot were from the fring so little take back and follow through.

have any of you guys tried this with any success?

i am looking forward to trying this out. especially the back-spin technique.

I've been using the third method with my SW - the cocking the wrists and returning to address position - for short shots, where the pin is quite close, quite sucessfully. I try to land the ball about 3 ft from the hole and let any bounce take care of the rest.

For longer shots where the pin is further away, I use a 9-iron or PW, and use my putting stroke. I then aim for the ball to land about half way to the hole and let the ball run on from there. Other people use different clubs to land the ball quickly and run the ball most of the way, but I find that it's easier for me to gauge 1/2 the distance to the hole, rather than a 1/3 or 1/4 of the way. The hardest part about this shot is you still have to be able to read the green quite well - how the ball is going to run, how fast the green is, breaks, etc.

There are loads of other different methods to get the ball close, but I've found personally for me, these methods either get me down in 2 or on the rare occasion, actually goes in!

Then a quick Mickelson-cherub grin to the crowd (my mates and the caddies), finishes of the hole quite nicely!
