| pulling short irons I am having a tough time figuring this one out. I am pulling my short irons, 50-58 degree on occassion, 9 iron. My alignment seems to be okay, since I hit all my other clubs straight. I align the grooves on the face perpendicular to the target, the align my stance according to the grooves. Sometimes I feel like I aim further and further to the right and still wind up left of the target. I've tried opening the face of the club, rotating grip....... Should I use a different swing path? |

| Re: pulling short irons It would seem, yes, you need to change your swing path. It sounds like an outside to inside path. I have seen this in other people, maybe this will apply to you or maybe not. Sometimes this happens with short irons because you’re not starting the down swing with your lower body. Presumably this is because it’s not a long shot and it doesn’t seem to "need" a lot of body. Unfortunately, if you don’t start the downswing with your lower body, you’re shoulders will turn first and get ahead of the hips. Classic over the top, outside to inside (right to left) strike on the ball sending it......left. Watch the pros. Even on short shots they turn the lower body ahead of the upper body. It’s just that it’s a shorter, more controlled move. BTW, lining up to the right makes this even worse. Subconsciously you know you’re lined up to the right and that the target is to the left. About the only way you can hit it to the target is to come over the top. |
