Short Game Marathon Day

Have any of you spent the entire day on the practice area on a golf course working on your short game? I tried it, and it is a very physical activity. I could only stay on the practice area for about 7 hours in the hot sun.
Im talking 4 hours on the putter and 4 to six on the short game. Please share your experience on this. If you want to play like the pros, then try to practice like them!!

Re: Short Game Marathon Day

I tend to avoid this level of practice.

I am not a grooved, majorly fit, professional golfer and long practice sessions can make me tired and lead to loss of mental focus and tired muscles creating breakdowns in the mechanics and thus potentially adding an unwanted element to my game.

I tend to keep my long game practice to 45 minutes or 60 balls, hitting no more than 10 drives. Then have a break and move on to an hour on my putting and chipping.

If I was to spend a longer amount of time on my putting or chipping I would do 45 mins then break for a while to think about what I had acheived or failed on then go back to focus on these.

Practice needs to be focused. Only my personal opinion but if it works for you....

Cheers

Re: Short Game Marathon Day

I subscribe to the Gary Player mode of practice, ie. do it until your hands are so bloody that you risk needing a transfusion.
Having done this, I am always 100% up and down, sand saves and otherwise never fear bunkers or chips.
By way of background, when I was going to college in Boston for 6 years, I worked as a steel welder on the high girders and as a hod carrier on weekends. As a result, I am used to pain and paying my dues.
