Greenside Heavy Rough Chipping

Monday I was playing a practice round at the course for my City Championship, three weeks away. I had at least 5 shots that about 3-6 feet in the greenside rough(lush blue grass), the rough was about 4 inches deep and my ball was about 2 inches above the soil level each and everytime. The pins were either 4-6 or 12-18 yards away on greens that are 10-11 on the Stimp. I am a very good chipper with imagination. I was at a loss, I am a 4 handicap. I was very lucky to have a bogie on a couple of those holes but double was the norm. Any input of what type of shot for either length of shot would be appreicated. I really was almost paralized.

When chipping from the rough I grip down to the end of the grip or lower so that the heel of the club is off the ground and only the toe has to go through the rough. This lessens the effect of the rough snagging the clubhead. I also grip tighter than normal.

I then do my normal practice swings while looking at my target landing area - very similar to what I do when chipping from a tighter lie.

I then take note of my followthrough length. I then add 3-5 inches to my followthrough to compensate for the clubhead slowing down through the rough.

On the actual swing, I make sure that I perform the same length of 'adjusted' followthrough and not quit on the shot.

make sure you use a sand wedge, the bounce and sole desing make it easier then using a lob or pitching wedge

If the ball is sitting up as you describe, choke up on the grip so you do not slide underneath the ball. If it is a close to the edge pin placement, you may need to open the face wider than usual and go through with a confident stroke. BE BRAVE!

If you carry a hybrid try a chip with your most lofted one.

in that kind of situation you may try a 3 wood! now if you are not confident enough try 1 wood (driver)you not going to be dissapointed!

I had a few chips from the rough yesterday where I had to perform the steps described above. I just realized that there was one key thing that was missing - ball position.

On a normal chip (from short grass), I prefer to hit the ball with a downward blow. I do this by positioning the ball back somewhere off my right foot.

On a chip from the rough, I move the ball position 2-3 inches forward (towards the target). Hitting down on the ball will not work well when there's a couple of inches of grass under the ball. In this situation, its actually better for contact to happen at the bottom of the swing or even on the (slight) upswing. Don't expect the ball to have any spin - definitely won't check.

Thanks for all the suggestions have tried all of them. I even have another that I had alot of success with and got spin on the ball. It isn't for the faint of heart.
Take a high bounce club, SW or LW, lay it open, position the ball middle or forward slightly, choke down alot, focus on a spot under the ball pick the club steeply and deliver it crisply to the point under the ball. I try to almost hit the hosel on the ball. The ball will pop up in to your face almost and you can see the spin it lands soft and stops. Like I said I am driving the heel down into the rough and almost think I am going to shank it, but a deliberate steep inside move stopped me doing that. The lenght of swing is the distence you need to carry to the spot you want it to land. Again thanks for the replies.

Am new to this game. Are you meant to follow the swing through completely after the ball is spinning?

As a rule - yes. But it depends on what type of shot you are playing (All this assumes I am understanding you correctly).
