Dave Pelz - best tip....

I have just started reading Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible - it is over 400 e-pages!

What is the best Dave Plez tip, that you have got.....

Finishing with high hands on the 20-90 yard pitch shots even with a short back swing- it helps to make you accelerate through the ball.

read the book. there are so many of them.
i think the biggest one for me was pace on a putt. a 2 foot putt hit to go 8 inches past the hole and lined up so it would hit the lip would fall on hole, a 2 foot putt hit harder so it would go 2 feet past and aimed inside the lip would lip out, so a putt hit with just the right pace would fall in and made the hole 6 inchs wide and a putt hit hard made the hole 2 inches wide. putting to a 6 inch hole is so much easer than trying to hit it into a 2 inch hole so i work on pace of ball more than lineand it works. you have to read his book a few times as you miss a lot and dont take it all in but he is the best at putting and the short game.

I really don't care for Pelz or his tips-too many gimmicks, bandaids etc.
Kathy Whitworth however has a good book for women which men can learn from also, her best tip was most have their hands too far ahead on short chips which causes them to stab at the ball and either chunk or close the face and get no spin.

Is Dave Pelz book available as an e-book? If yes can you send it as an e-mail to me too?

I'd have to say the 4x4 wedge system is the best Pelz advice. I still don't have time to practice my pitching the way Pelz advises (although I wish I did). But the 4x4 wedge system really helped my short game (although I should re-check my distances... new swing things, etc).

are e-books free??

No sir. Although they are often redistributed as though they are.

Ebooks are just faster than the USPS, or even UPS. You often pay the same price (less the cost of shipping)... but then if you want a hardcopy, you have to print it out.

Pelz is O.K. I guess. I personally dont like his stuff. He tries to be Mr golf scientist. I wonder what he could shoot on his own. I believe there are better instructors out there for the short game. Leadbetter, Haney etc.

for the full swing i would agree. leadbetter and haney. but for the short game dave plez is the best. there is a few pros that use both plez and leadbetter, i think they use dave plez more for putting than his short game but not sure.
i have learned more from plez books the all of the leadbetter videos and his interactive dvd, i think leadbetters interactive is great for the full swing but he hardly touches the short game and nothing about putting.
if i had the money to have lessons i would go to leadbetter to help with my full swing then to plez for my shot game and putting.
i think there are 4 games in golf. putting, the short game and the full swing and also course management.
remember it was dave plez the started the 4 wedge system and got the pros to use it. before plez you would find it hard to find a pro with 3 wedges never mind 4. he has made everyone aware how important the short game is in scoring well and a lot of that down to his scientist aproch to finding data and using it to show his point, he is also a good golfer and still plays a lot too and he can pitch and chip really good and he is a great putter too. i have never seen leadbetter or haney play a round of golf but that dont matter if they can help your game and see and fix your faults. bob torance if a wonderful teacher and he teaches the person not the swing, i dont see many x-pros coming out as great teachers, i know monty had done a bit of teaching and years ago trevino did a bit too. but with trevino its more hints as what to do to play better.
one other thing, i think its very hard to teach golf through a book, i think hogan, and plez are the two i think that have done it best so far.

Thanks! I appreciate your reply. Leadbetter did play successfully on the European tour for several years, and was a fair player. Not anything great but a solid player. Haney is a good player but is to busy making money to take the time to work at his game. Tiger wants him to play more and tells him to do so. Golf is a sport that takes all your time and concentration to play at a tour player level. I practice everyday 7 days a week and still need alot of improvements in my game to stay at a good playing level. My scores range from 68 to 78. I need to be more consistant. Dave Pelz is a good teacher I guess, but he is so technical. Boring to me, but I guess he sells alot of books. 4 wedges is to many for me. Thanks Kelsey

Dave Pelz is a scientist, schooled in the Scientific Method. His book doesn't read like a good novel, because he's not a story teller. But his analysis of the short game is truly remarkable. Some "feel" players want nothing to do with him and his graphs. He says so in his book, but if you like the true cold, hard facts, his book makes lots of sense.

"Dead Hands" to have pressure play equal range practice, the 3x4 wedge system (which many other teachers espouse a 3x3 system, and name it differently), the percentage of risk vs. reward on short game shots, his advice on how to handle tricky lies, there are lots of good things in his book.

And they work too. My short game has improved since starting his system only three weeks ago. I no longer am as frustrated by 90 yards and in. I'm not perfect at executing yet, by any means, but I can't tell you how many times I've hit a big beautiful drive to within 30 yards of a par 4 only to bogey the hole!

I know he is a dry technical writer, but I like that. I like having all the facts, all the angles, then applying what works to my game. Like he said to an interviewer once about working with Phil Nickleson, "I don't tell him what shots to hit, I just show him the percentages for success of each shot in a given situation".

So many times I've watched Ledbetter (who I like as a teacher) or one of the "Top 100" teachers give a lesson and say, "Sure that's great stuff, but very generic and doesn't apply to my game and swing, etc. But Pelz spells out everything, so all the info is there, you have the info to apply it to your game.

Archery is another sport I participate in, they are very simular in fact. And the more technical I got about form and performance, etc. The more I could work up my technique (pre-shot routine even!) so that on those days when I can't "feel it" I can still shoot well.

His system does require lots of practice. But I also like to practice.
