Chipping with Big Bertha irons

I have been using Big Bertha Irons now for about 3 months and i'm very satisfied with the long and mid irons. The problem that I have with these irons is chipping. I seem to be hitting them too thin when I have a delicate chip to hit. Has anyone else experienced difficulty chipping with these irons? I have been going back to my old Knight wedges and the chipping have been fine.

You must be standing too high of failing to hit down into the back of the ball. These clubs have a wide sole and maybe you are not getting your hands forward enough.

Try placing the ball back a bit when chipping, keep it by the big toe of your back foot with your hands set well ahead.

Thanks Brian. I'll try that suggestion and let you know how it works out.

Re: Chipping with Big Bertha irons

I am chipping much better based upon the suggestions. The only problem I see with Big Bertha irons is because it has a wide bottom it is difficult to chip and pitch from irregular lies; such as, lumpy turf or thick turf.

Re: Chipping with Big Bertha irons

Will definitely try this out and let you know how things go. Sounds tricky. It almost sounds like youre rolling the club into the ball on your swing. Does that sound right?

Thank you Sir for the advice.

I have the same problem. I am not too keen on those wide soles. I just read an article on the advatages of perimeter weighting, but it is remarkable when we change clubs, this problem disapears. I have been using a Taylormade - and Ping wedge as substitutes. Granted the problem is with me, not the club design!

Re: Chipping with Big Bertha irons

interesting article.
I used to use Callaway X14 and also found them rubbish for pitching & chipping, especially half shots and tight lies.
I changed to Nike blades and initially I found the longer irons less forgiving but the shorter irons were excellent from day 1.
After a short while I can now state that even the longer irons are far superior.
On a tangent, I have now started to use Titleist Vokey spin milled 54 & 60 degree wedges......EXCELLENT contact to ball off all lies and INCREDIBLE SPIN.
So in summary, thick soled perimeter weighting on short irons did not suit me !

Re: Chipping with Big Bertha irons

Excellent commentary on game improvement short irons (wedges). I have been using Knight wedges and they are much easier to hitand control than the callaway berthas, as far as wedges are concerned.

Thank you,

robf
