| Cant hit my irons long.. Alright.. Iron play... my irons at the moment are Taylormade RAC OS set,i currently have in my bag a 5-PW but i cant seem to hit my irons far.. my distances are as follows 9-130 8-140 7-155 6-165 5-175 You can tell i don't hit my 5 iron far.. it really hurts my game when it comes to the long par 3's, 180 and back. I'm currently about an 8 handicap.. most of my high scores comes from scrambling on these holes.. i wanna give myself a chance to birdie some holes and shoot lower scores... any ideas or tips?hybrids? I'm also 17 years old on cjga and weight about 140 and not the strongest kid... could this be affecting my distances.. or the clubs?

| Re: Cant hit my irons long.. I do not think that the distances are terrible. How far do you hit your driver? I am not sure your automatically going to pick up distance with a hybrid, maybe accuracy. The thing I have found with my long irons is to avoid the tendencey that you need to swing harder. The ball for me goes a lot farther when I keep my normal tempo and rotation then when I focus on trying to swing harder or faster. |

| Re: Cant hit my irons long.. 9-130---nice, to get this distance you are doing a lot of things right. 8-140 7-155 6-165 5-175---I assume this is yards. You are right. By the distance you are hitting your short irons, your 5 iron should be longer. check that you are not swatting the ball--could be that your long irons are getting ahead of your hands you might be delofting the club a bit. I am just guessing here and relating this to my past experience. A bit of practice I would expect you to be hitting your 5 iron 200 by the distance that you are hitting your 9 iron.

| Re: Cant hit my irons long.. Your yardages are the same as mine now. I quit swinging out of my shoes and swing more controlled now. I lost ten yards a club but have more control now. I gladly made that trade. What clubs do you have to replace your 3 and 4 iron ? I noticed you dont have them . If you hit your irons good then get a 3 and 4 or hybrids to replace them. This should fill the gap. Good luck . |

| Re: Cant hit my irons long.. I'm WAY shorter than that, and at 6'2" and 80kilos I'm fairly fit for my age (almost the dreaded 4.0). I hit my 7-iron about 130meters, which is somewhere around 145yds. I DO however hit it HIGH, which makes it drop down dead from the sky in a fairly predictable manner. ![]() |

| Re: Cant hit my irons long.. mrbeauchesne if those distances are yards, then i would suggest it is a lil short. i'm 26, but about the same weight as you with a handicap of 16, i also use the same clubs.i hit my 7i 150m, 9i 130m, 3i 190m, driver 10.5d 250m on a good hit with roll. i would say you might not be rotating your shoulders properly and releasing the club head through impact. you may also be somewhat scooping at the ball. u should pay to get a lesson or get us a video of your swing and people on the boards can evaluate your swing and tell u where u might be going wrong. |

| Re: Cant hit my irons long.. Those distances don't seem bad to me at all, and according to this study, Golfers they're not bad either. They're better than average, but less than the "good" category--but then you're only 17 and your musculature isn't fully developed yet. Please don't be insulted, but at your age and weight you should probably compare yourself to the women pros, who have very well conditioned muscles but not a lot of muscle mass. And in that comparison, you are ahead. Although muscle mass is to some extent genetic, most men add muscle between your age and their mid-20s. You can probably expect to do so as well. Note that muscle size, muscle mass, and strength are not the same thing. Strength training will affect all three, but in ways that are genetically determined.
