Chipping Fundamentals

Here is a list of the fundamentals for chipping

I also included a great acronym to go along with it to remind you of the fundamentals.

First lets describe the fundamentals.

Take a narrow stance, by this I mean feet close together parallel left of your target, for advanced players open your stance

The reason for this is to keep the majority of weight on your left side.

You want the weight on your left side to promote a descending blow into the ball ensuring crisp contact.

Place the golf ball in the back of your stance, by this I mean off of your back foot.

(For advanced players you may move the ball around in your stance for specialty shots) It should be moved no further forward than sternum.

Here is the acrnoym you can use on the course

B-Ball back in stance
L-wieght on left foot
T-tilt the shaft forward(this will happen naturally when you place the wieght on your forward foot)

Good Luck

Chipping

Hello,I'm not a good golfer but I must disagree with your post.Take a 52 degree sand wedge like I have.Put it in the front of your stance. Then put it in the middle of your stance.Next put it at your right foot.Look at the different angles. At your right foot if you look at the club you have turned it into a n 8 iron. While you can get it in the air it is not consistant.I say middle or forward.Using a putting stance and swing I am able to get alot more air and backspin.I'm not a pro but it seems to be working for me.Just trying to help.I accept all feed back.

I understand where you are coming from but the shot Jordy is decribing is different that the one you are.

Jordy's shot is a delofted wedge to chip the ball over the edge of the green and get it rolling like a putt. Playing it back helps control the distance. The shot you are describing it more like a pitch with a little backspin and a lot less roll. Both shots are viable in certain situations. Jordy's to roll out on a flat green, yours on a tiered green when you must get it on a different tieir and hold.

I don't like delofting clubs I use a putting stroke with a 5 or 6 iron to create the same shot as a delofted wedge. Who made up the rule to only use wedges around the green? I play bunker shots with 7 -8 irons on a long shot. There are more shots around the green than there is shots, one only has to use the imagination and practice.

If you want the GolfBald challenge, try a severe downhill lie with a 60° lob wedge off a choppy grass hard dirt lie to a short sided green and make it check up after 1 hop, oh any by the way, you have to take a full swing. Shot length 20 -25 yards.

Tricky Shot

Hello,Golfbald

We have a tuff hole here at the course I play at.#8,you tee off on a hill.If you play the fairway you have to drive it a long way's.There are trees on the right. If you don't drive it far enough you have to hit over the trees and make it stick on the green. If you play it straight ther is one spot that has good grass. You have a little lane between trees. It has to be a good drive or you are playing off dirt.I have only played the fairway 2 times.I did make it far enough to take the trees out of play.My drive isn't good enough to play that way all the time.I've only been playing about a year and a half. For some reason my slice is back with a vengence!Anyway the green is brutal. If the flag is in the middle you have to land it in front of the flag.If you land it at the flag or behind it you will roll off the green. We have alot of greens like that. That is why I'm practicing using my sand wedge.I'd rather play agreesive to the flag with backspin than try to chip and roll it to the flag.My putting is awefull also .I'm trying I just can't find that touch. My brother is trying to tell me to play my slice but I don't want to.Chipping is about the only thing I can do right at this time.Other than a 3 wood I seem to be hitting that prety good.I slice alot less than with my driver.3 and 6 iron ,3 wood and sand wedge I can hit halfway descent ,all others are really slicing bad.Any ideas would be nice.
Thanks.

Patter,

My suggestion at this point would be put your driver in the closet for a while. Learn to play with the 3 wood first you will not loose as many shots to par. Practice a 6 ot 7 iron alot make that your "go to" distance to the green. Put the sand wedge away also from the fairway. Develop a consistant 1/2 to 3/4 swing with a 9i and PW. Using these 2 clubs will help you develop a better full swing and boost your confidence. It's not always about hitting the pro looking high arcing or piercing flight, it's all about scoring with the talent you have.

I would also suggest taking a few lessons. Your game will improve faster.

Hope this helps,
GolfBald
