Hopeless with irons

Hi, I've just joined, so if this has come up before I appologise. I cannot seem to get the hang of hitting down on the ball. I drive well, usually getting in on the fairway, not the longest, but as I struggle with my flexibility, I do ok. On a par 4 I usually get to within 120 - 90 meters from the pin off the tee, and then my problems start. Using a normal stance, I usually slice it, don't get any hieght, and miss the green, even on the odd time I hit it it'll usually roll off!

Now I have found out recently I'm left eye dominant. Someone has told me that I should move keep the ball towards my left foot (I'm right handed), and look at the front of the ball, making sure I keep my wieght 60/40 on my left side. And keep my hands infront of the club face. Will this work?

Re: Hopeless with irons

All the advice sounds like it's adding up to solid ballstriking.

I'm a big fan of a simple tee drill.

Put a tee in the ground, level with the top of the grass, 3" in front of the ball. Do whatever you have to do to hit the ball AND dig the tee out of the ground.

For me, right now, I have to focus on hitting the inside quarter of the ball and digging out the imaginary tee. This produces solid ball strikes for me.

Re: Hopeless with irons

hi
i would go along with what Lowpost said. i don't try and hit down on thew ball as it will happen by its self you will come into the ball steeper with the shorter irons and i like to think of a point a few inches in front of the ball as my target and swing to it and let the ball just get in the way. i find i hit the ball a lot cleaner that way.
try what lowpost said and put a tee or a coin about 2 to 3 inches ahead of the ball and line you with the ball bit swing to hit the tee or coin. it helps you move your weight to the left and keeps the club head speed up.
also try and swing a little slower and think more on making clean contact. when you start hitting cleaner then speed up a little but work on cleaner contact first, as you hit longer with a good sweet spot hit swinging slower than swinger faster and hitting of the sweet spot.
cheers
bill

Re: Hopeless with irons

Thanks guys, I'll give them a go once this rain stops!

It's been a fanastic summer here in NZ (a bit too dry if anything), but winter has suddenly hit, and I haven't been able to get out and play (on my days off) for nearly 3 weeks!!!!

Re: Hopeless with irons

Mmmm. Played the other day, with a mate of mine. He doesn't believe in practise, and always wants to "get on with it". So it was straight into a round. I didn't play well

So I decided whilst he had a celebratory drink (he beat me by one shot, I usually beat him!) I went to practise. And low and behold, I tried the drill you guys suggested and it worked (well most of the time). Even got within 2 inches of sinking one from about 100 meters!!!! Only trouble was I kept loosing coins!

Re: Hopeless with irons

Try leaves, or put your ball 3" behind a brown bit of grass, or a cigarette butt, or a bit of dirt, or an old divot (and make it a trench)...
