Hi Rick,
Welcome to the site I hope you get some help from it.
I would suggest at your level you leave the driver at home for a year or so, use your 3 wood off the tee and practice with it, it will be easier to hit right now and will give a decent distance.
You are correct that distance will come later' don't hit too hard or fast right now just work on a nice smooth swing, it may help to get a few lessons with a local professional to get you started on track. Please enjoy the journey.
