Question divots on short and medium irons

On short and medium irons I tend to strike the ball and the ground almost together rather than the ball first and then the ground. I find I can fix this to a degree if I concentrate on on swinging through a spot say around half inch in front of the ball. Any other ideas on how to overcome this?

Re: divots on short and medium irons

Always remember that where you strike the ground is the middle of your center. So this is why a steep attacking angle with short irons like to have the ball back of the stance so the ball is hit first. Longer irons where the angle of attack is less steep allows the ball position more forward.

So look at the ball position first. If that is in the back slightly, look towards your balance through the shot. Are you getting your weight on you front foot at impact...like every shot should...?

Smile Re: divots on short and medium irons

thank you for the advice - I've only been playing golf around 4 years and when I started, I tended to make an agrressive move forward - I was told this wasn't correct and I should "allow" my weight to transfer to the front foot - I know I finish on the front foot but I now tend to allow it to happen?

Re: divots on short and medium irons

Hi and welcome Bobby,

A good tip I received a few years ago was work on your swing and don't go looking for divots, get the swing working and the divot will come naturally.

It is hard enough trying to hit the ball never mind dig a hole as well.......

If you work on anything try to hit the top of the ball on the downswing.

Hope this helps.

Ian.

"About the same time" is fine ... I don't think you have anything to worry about provided you're not losing accuracy.

Unless you're a touring pro looking for perfection, your impact sounds fine to me.
