Question Hello and help!

Hi everyone. I've just registered and had a look around the site. It looks great and there seems to be a lot of help out there.
I have a 14 hadicapp and have played for 20+ years. The one big problem I have is slicing my drives and long irons . I know its not uncommon !!! and there's no instant fix but can anyone give me a few pointers on what to look out for and what adjustments I could try on the practice range .
Thanks
Colin

Re: Hello and help!

Well Colin,

I slice my driver and fade my hybrids (3,4,5) when I setup SQUARE. A square setup works just fine for my other clubs.

So, when I'm on the course, I'll close my stance (put my trailing foot further away from the target line), widen my stance a bit, and think 'flatter swing'. It results in a swing that would otherwise be outside the target line, but results in a straight shot.

Unfortunately, I have no long range practice facility close by (to work on a full-time solution), so I only have a temporary fix to offer.

I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.

For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.

Thumbs up Re: Hello and help!

Thanks LowPost42. I get the idea. I'll give it a try at the weekend. If it works the drinks are on me.

Thanks
Colin

Practice a one plane swing.
It turned a friends wicked slice into a very controllable fade.
Got to be worth a try.

Question Re: Hello and help!

Thanks XIX. Do you mean use the same plane swing I use with my shorter irons which do not slice?

Colin

Re: Hello and help!

If you don't slice with that swing then yes ,why not use it.

You need to find out whether you have a one plane or two plane swing.
One plane is a flatter swing so promotes a draw tendancy (or if you slice really bad like my friend ,a fade)
Have a look here
http://www.mountainweb.com/oneplanegolfswing/
It explains the two different swings.

Re: Hello and help!

Sounds like you are either coming on open or swinging from out to in.
Thats assuming that you have correct alignment and a good grip.

I'd check the grip and alignment first, easier than trying to change your swing.

You wont see it as much on the higher clubs as the more loft creates more backspin, which hides side-spin.
Thats why its worse with your driver.

If you can get yourself a lesson and save on heartache!

Re: Hello and help!

without seeing your swing its hard to tell. make sure you are getting as much of a shoulder turn as you can on back swing and try working on follow thru and finish than hitting the ball.try hitting with your feet closer together for balance and hold your finish till ball lands.helps the muscle memory. hope it helpsthe two best golfers on earth (GOD DAMNIT & JESUS CHRIST) they play every course i go too

Re: Hello and help!

You've probably had sufficient advice to be going on with already, but this extra tip won't hurt and will certainly help your slice. I have always had a natural fade in my ball flight. However, I have virtually eliminated it by placing the back foot further back at address, and slowing down the back swing so as to feel the body turning as the club goes back. I still generate a good deal of club head speed on the downswing, but with far more accuracy. I am hitting the ball much further too. A quick backswing can throw you off balance and is also much more difficult to control, usually causing an out-to-in swing path, e.g. slice.

Cheers.
Lee.

Re: Hello and help!

Thanks Leebev, that makes a lot of sense. I do have a very fast back swing !!! I'll give it a go.

Cheers
Colin
