Novice golfer

Hello, All

I am trying golf as a sport and to enchance my physical fitness. My Son is an avid golfer and has suggested golf as a way to enjoy my retirement from the Telecomm industry. I find golf instructors difficult to locate in South Florida and a bit pricey. I thought I would try some video tapes first to get the basic techniques down before I am prepared to take expensive lessons. Is this a good or bad idea? I was an athletic person who played and coached baseball for some years and a golf swing should not be to difficult for me. As a blue collar-Technician for Daddy Bell I am frugal and don't wish to take very expensive lessons until I atleast know the basic ball striking techniques for drivers, putting and using the irons and hybrids.

Re: Novice golfer

Well,

Being an instructor myself, you will probably take this as a way to get you to pay instructors, but hear me out...

Starting out is hard. Learning the swing alone with nothing to go on but your buddies or son teaching you is risky. You can easily get into bad positions that start to feel normal, and any attempt to change those will meet with added resistance, and time.

Starting out with proper instruction, no matter the cost, will be overall benificial to you. Even if it is a group lesson with 6 others is good, and I suggest this becase you get to hear and see others in the same level as you and that will help your confidence.

If you can only find 1 on 1 instructions, take about 4 over 2 weeks and practice 4 hours between each, and you will see immediate progress that will stay with you forever.

This is an extreamly expensive sport. Spending money up-front for lessons is worth every dollar...3-fold. You will learn the right stuff right away, and it will be an easy transition for you. Possibly starting out bad, and fixing it later will take 3 times the lessons and practice to get to the same place. Do you want to risk that?
