Generate more power

Hi guys,
Just had my first golf lesson yesterday and it was quite positive,i've been told i have a decent grip and set up so the fundementals are there to begin with but how do i generate more power in my shot?I tend to hit my best shot with a 7 iron about 140yrds,meanwhile my friend who is a golf pro steps up and rips it about 170 yrds and makes it look effortless.I,m infairly good shape for my age 37 and i sometimes see 13 year old girls hit a ball over 200 yrds so i must be doing something wrong,i'm not embarassed by this just a little frustrated, any suggestions most grateful.

Re: Generate more power

you may have enough power, power is not what hits the ball so far, swing speed is. and that is developed through proper technique.

gregs right hand drill is good and impact dril is good

i think this would be a good site too
http://www.newgolfswing.com/newgolfswing02.php
it is very in depth on but different people have differnt opions on what is "proper"

http://www.golf-tuition-online.com/n...questions.html (Some basic questions.)

it might not be a professional answer, but i wrote about what works for me as far as releasing the club and you are welcome to read it. hth

Re: Generate more power

I would guess that the thing you need is more practice. Without actually looking at your swing I assume your coaches know what their doing.

I started golf about 6 years ago (when in my mid 30's) and would hit my 7 iron about the same distance as you, after playing about twice a week during the summer and taking winters off I am consistently hitting my 7 iron about 160 give or take a few yards.

I think that the increase has come from a variety of areas:

1. increased swing speed. Just getting the muscles used to swinging the club and doing it rather often have increased the speed.

2. making better contact. I no longer hit behind the ball as much or blade shots.

3. My swing feels much more "tighter then it was" basically it is the same swing every time. when I started I always tried to swing harder and since realized for me when I take an easy swing the ball goes further if technically sound. i.e complete my back swing use my bigger muscles more in the swing as opposed to just my arms.

4. confidence (don't ask me why but when I am relaxed and just step up and hit the ball it always seems to go durther then when I am thinking about grip posture and fundamentals)

Right now I am swinging the club real well (the feeling only seems to last a month or so then goes haywir : )

Re: Generate more power

hi all
want more distance then hit ball in sweet spot with club looking at target when it come into impact and is still looking at target when ball leaves face of club an inch later, even a slow swing speed will hit ball long, it more about inpact on right spot on club that swingspeed that misses sweet spot because you swing out of control.

Re: Generate more power

I agree with ogallalabob, I was playing golf 2 times a week and hitting the balls at the driving range at least once a week. But I had the last 4 months off. I only started back 2 weeks ago. I am now starting to get the same sort of controll I had before, but I have lost a lot of distance. I do have to admit my muscles are sore as hell, I was getting about 165 out of my 7 iron but today was only getting 155. So keep up the practice and build up those muscles. My coach also has had the same problem, when is was touring he was getting driving 320 yards, but now he is just coaching and he only drives 300 yards.

Re: Generate more power

Thanks for reply Bob i think confidence does relax my swing a little more and tend to hit a better shot when i'm not thinking to much standing over the ball.

Re: Generate more power

hi jeffgunter
i find if i swing at 100% i cant control the flight of the ball and i dont know if it will go right or left, if i swing at 90% i can hit a high fade 9 out of 10 time the other one 1% is still on fairway and playable, took me many years to realise its not about hitting at 100% but about control and using the club like it should and thats making sure the ball comes of the part of the club its made too and thats the sweet spot, take a ball and hold the shaft half way up and tap the ball over the face of the club, when you hit the sweet spot the club swings back of the ball with ease and not twisting, imaging what its like the other way when the club with all that force hit that little ball on that sweet spot. it really makes such a diffrence, the ball flys longer, higher and with more backspin and the back spin overpowers the side spin so flies where you want it too.
hope this helps, get into a grove where you swing within yourself and you know you always have a little extra inreserve.
bill

Re: Generate more power

Hi Gunter,

see my post regarding "hitting down". If you can get to achieve this it will certainly increase your distance. As the guys have said, power doesnt come from strength, it is a combination of club head speed and good shoulderturn

Re: Generate more power

you are going to lose distance on that type of ball flight. These shots are great for going into greens because they land softly. As you work with you pro and start drawing the ball, you will see more distance.
