| Hello. New Member needs help! Hello-- I'm about a 10 handicapper, but I recently developed a swing problem that none of the pros at my local course can fix. Hopefully, someone here might give me some pointers for the range! What I am doing is hitting my irons too high and fairly short. I figure that since i'm young (26), big (6'5, 220), and an avid golfer (i play everyday and WORK at a Driving Range!) that I should be able to carry the ball with, say, and 8 iron at least 150 yards. That's not a lot, I know, but right now, I'm only hitting it about 120-130 in the air. Not nearly enough. I was wondering if you guys could think of some tips to get my trajectory down, or give me more power. I don't slice, or hook; the ball goes pretty straight quite often, but it's aggravating that everyone I play with is hitting their irons longer. Any tips? |

| Re: Hello. New Member needs help! Hi and welcome to GTO. Just off the top of my head I'm thinking ball position might be the problem. Of course, without actually seeing your swing it's hard to tell. If your irons are going way too high, try setting up with the ball back a little farther in your stance. I play with the ball back farther for my short irons and ahead more for long irons. For example, my Pitching Wedge I play the ball back about 3 inches from center while my 7 iron is almost dead center. For me the important thing while doing this is keeping the hands at the same position no matter which iron I'm using. The back of my right hand is always dead center. By placing the ball back farther you will deloft the club a little causing it to have a lower trajectory and longer distance. Check out this link on ball position, it might help. http://www.golf-tuition-online.com/g...-position.html Also, if you scroll to the top of the page on GTO you'll see all the different places you can visit on the site. The sixth one over is Golf Lessons. Check these out and you may get some valuable tips.

| Re: Hello. New Member needs help! I also had this problem. I'm not quite your size (I'm 6'2 and 220) but hopefully your problem is as fix as mine was. An 8 iron for me would go about 140 yards max but with a big ballooning trajectory that was killed if there was any wind. This was very frustrating as playing partners who I would outdrive by 40 yards would be taking a club less than me when hitting irons. I noticed that when I hit the ball, although it would go pretty straight with just a hint of fade, the marks on the bottom of the club face would indicate that I hit the ball with the club face wide open! I wasn't hitting a slice with this open face as my swing path was quite in-to-out to compensate. So I was effectively turning my 8 iron into a sand wedge! I really noticed this when I had a video lesson which showed this open face at impact. This cause and cure were very simple. My grip, which I thought was quite neutral/slightly strong was actually very weak although it didn't appear to be at first glance. Making my grip than bit stronger has literally changed my ball flight. 8 irons go about 160+ with a slight draw and I've lost my tendency to fade my longer irons too. I would recommend a video lesson to pinpoint what you are doing at impact as it's very revealing. Moving the ball back a fraction can also be a help as CM44 has mentioned (I also play 7 iron dead centre and everything else moves back and forward from there).
