Hi from UK

Hi everyone. Just found this site and its pretty awesome. Seen some other golf forums but the info available here is just great

Struggling with my driver at the moment . Just can't seem to keep the ball in play. Sometimes big slice, sometimes pull, sometimes big hook. I have absolutely no idea whats wrong. Every other club in the bag is fine! Having to resort to a 3 iron or 5 wood off the tee which is a big disadvantage.

Even more annoying .... I can't repeat it on the range so I can't show the fault to the local pro! Darn it.

Herb

hi herbert
welcome to the site
have you tried hitting 3 wood off the tee?
ok the distance will be less but they are easier to hit more accurately!

Re: Hi from UK

Thanks Slats. Yeah - I meant 3 wood sorry. Slip of the finger - I don't even possess a 5 wood!

Must be a mental thing with me. I'm not a great striker (12 hcap) but I can keep most balls on the fairway EXCEPT those hit with driver. I just can't stop lashing at it. I've had 5 drivers in 5 years so its definately the nut behind the butt and not the equipment. Like everyone else who plays - I keep hoping that one day I'll master this game

im the same every now and then i try to smash the ball with the driver my biggest improvement was when i started to count out my tempo in my head for all the club.
when i stick to that i usually have a nice straight drive around the 240yd mark

Re: Hi from UK

Try playing from a more closed stance! It will get you hitting a draw because you will be hitting it from an inside path! All the shots you explained you were doing are all from hitting the ball from a outside path.

Re: Hi from UK

You're right about the out to in. But won't a closed stance make things worse unless I correct the out to in?

Re: Hi from UK

Hey I think I found some answers to my dreadful driving abilities.

I bought some longer tees and started to tee it much higher, which has helped but a pal of mine suggested that I shorten the shaft as the standard 45.75in one I have is just too hard to control. He was right! I haven't shortened it yet but I have played two rounds now choking down the shaft right to the bottom of the grip. Its going the same distance as before but now I'm hitting many more fairways! So its off to the pro shop next week to hacksaw a couple of inches off and fit a new grip with a couple or 3 layers of tape. Anyone else had any success with shorter shafts in their driver??

hI hERB,

yOU HAVE DISCOVERED A VERY IMPORTANT POINT regarding the tee height for driver. As the driver strikes the ball with an upward blow, the heught of the tee is crucial.
