Woods Woes

I am new to golf and broke 100 my 3rd time out. My short game is relatively decent for a beginner but of course I will always need practice in particular with consistent accuracy. My problem is with my woods. Wether off the tee with my 3, 5 and driver or off the fairway with my 3 and 5 and simply cannot get a hit with them. I will hit maybe one in 10 that doesnt slice, draw, cruise a foot above ground or just simply roll on the ground. I tend to use my 3 or 5 hybrids in place of the woods because I get more distance with them and more accuracy, in fact they are my best two clubs. I have tried moving the ball forward, back, closer and furthe away. I have watched my swing plane to make sure I am not coming down on the ball as with irons but rather sweeping the ball. I am watching the arc of the swing. I seem to never get a good square hit, but rather hit near the hozzle or the toe. I am about ready to toss out the woods and driver and go solely with my hybrid 3 for long shots. I can get 202 to 220 with my hybrid 3. I am using Taylor Made R7 woods and driver, the driver set with a draw since I tend to slice more than draw. I am diligent to make sure my grip and stance are good and I tee the ball up so the top of the club meets the center of my ball. I have tried variations of that as well to correct the problem. I have even tried other clubs and its all the same so it is not the clubs, it is me. I do not kill the ball in fact I have a nice swing according to golf pro's who have tried to help me. Even they are frustrated trying to figure it out. I put 60 to 70 percent of my weight on my right leg and shift the weight to the left leg as my hip and legs move to the left. My hands pass slightly over the ball before the head gets to it. I work very hard to follow through with my hands making the X (right over left) as I come through the follow through.

post a video of your swing if you can it makes it easier for the guys to diagnose what you are doing wrong

Have you tried hitting a one-iron (driving iron) and/or two-iron?

Try imagining your 3 or 5 wood is a seven iron when you swing...In the meantime, until you figure it out, stick with the hybrids...

I haven't been out on the range since I posted but I plan to try all the advice given here. We have alot of snow on the ground but things have cleared a bit, will try this weekend.

When hitting off the fairway with a wood there is a tendency to try and lift the ball off the ground rather than hitting slightly down and through the ball. Woods have loft, albeit a smaller one that an iron, so let the loft of the club take care of getting the ball in the air. Don't try to scoop the ball up into the air. Your low shots may be a result of lifting the club as it come into the ball and putting some top spin on it. So the idea of kind of hitting it like an iron might reinforce the idea for you.

you hit the nail on the head. When I first posted I had been advised by a friend of mine of the same thing. Went out tonight and tried it, it made a world of difference. I wonder if my driver swing could be the same way. Maybe I am trying to change my swing too much from irons and trying to sweep and lift the ball. These are wonderful thoughts and I intend to try all of them until I get it right. I might be old but if I can break 100 my third time out I know I can do better all around.
