Question Compression

I am trying to explain compression to my son. I can't seem to find an adequate definition anywhere. Can you help?

Re: Compression

The best definition I have ever heard was:

Get an elastic band.
Loop it a few times around two fingers.
Then go for more loops.

Even though the band has not physically changed, the compression on your fingers increases with more and more loops. This is kind of what happens in the golf ball.

I will see if I can find a link to the original webpage.

Re: Compression

One definition of Compression as it might relate to golf is as follows:

The degree to which a substance or object (the golf ball) has decreased in size (in volume, length, or some other dimension) after being or while being subject to stress.

You could get a tennis ball and flatten it out between the palms of your hand to physically demonstrate the way the ball changes shape. Going from shperical to elliptical and back again.

Cheers
