One of the most common mistakes of a beginner is to try and help the ball into the air. The club is designed to get the ball in the air for you. Grab a 7 iron or a PW or whatever you are comfortable with (as long as it is a short iron) and put the ball in the middle of your stance and just try to swing back and smoothly through the ball, nothing else, just brush the grass where your ball is and the ball will get airborne on it's own. Don't try and watch the ball go, just focus on looking at where the ball was and your head will naturally turn as you follow through. I guarantee you will start to get the ball in the air. Once you have, note your common trajectory (does it go straight, start left and go way right, go straight left etc etc) come back here and we can give you some pointer from there.'
Good luck and stick with it. This is the greatest game ever invented, devilishly hard, frustrating, marvelously strategic and rewarding. Once the bug has bitten, you will be at the start of a life long journey of ups and downs, successes and disappointments. Enjoy it!
